The start of the city of Kamloops date back to the Secwepemc (Shuswap) nation of the Interior Salish language group, who were really the very first inhabitants of the area. The very first European explorers arrived in the year 1811, when David Stuart arrived from Fort Astoria. The word "Kamloops" is the anglicized version of the Shuswap word, "Tk'emlups," which means "meeting of the waters." Another possible origin of the name comes from the French "Camp des loups" that translates to 'Camp of Wolves', likely spoken by fur traders.
